Reinstall CBS

Home Up

This document describes the procedure for reinstalling CBS on your computer.  This may be necessary if you have a major hard drive crash or if you are switching operating systems.

Please follow these steps EXACTLY

Note:  This document is intended to assist your computer technician and is not intended for use by the average CBS customer.

1)  Make a complete backup of the C:\CBS folder and the C:\AW folder.  Use a CD drive, Zip disk or other high capacity backup for this process as the files will be too large for diskette.  If you don't know how to copy an entire folder please PLEASE hire a good consultant to do the work for you.  Sure your brother-in-law knows lots about computers but would you trust him with all your patient data?  Get a professional.  In Saskatoon we suggest James Lau with 3P computers (249-1919).

Note:  CBS is not responsible for fees charged by consultants - that's your bill to pay.

If your system is crashed and it is absolutely impossible to make a complete backup of the CBS folder you will need to contact the CBS office for assistance.  Please stop now and call us.

2)  Backup any other data files you will need on your computer (word documents, accounting data, etc).  Verify that you have all the original software disks you require (word processor, accounting software, etc).

3)  Verify that your backup is working.  Take the data to a different computer and read the data from your backup to a folder on the new computer.  In particular, verify that the CBS.MDB file is intact and not corrupted in any way.  This step is critical.

4)  Once you have completed the above steps - in particular, once you have verified that your backup is functional, erase your drive and reinstall your new Operating system.  Note:  If you don't have a backup or if you have not verified your backup, please stop and go back to the missed step

5)  Reload your CBS software from your original disks or download a new copy here and install it.

6)  Reload the files you backed up in step 1 over top of the newly installed CBS files.

7)  Reload your other software (Word processing, accounting, etc)

8)  Restore any other data files you backed up in step 2 (Word documents, etc).

Note that if you are using CD for the backup your files may become write protected.  Check the file attributes to insure that all files are read/write.
